Sunny oasis — Ashgabat

The Kopetdag Mountains, which were the bottom of the ancient ocean millions of years ago, are adjacent to the Karakum Desert, but there, on thi land, the eternal rivals, mountains and sands, show harmony in relationships. And in the heart of this harmonious union a pearl, sparkling with whiteness, has grown. Ashgabat is a city dear to our hearts. Love of it does not leave us even when we are apart from it. We grow up, and it grows with us, we become white-haired people, but it turns into a young, tall, like a fantastic mirage, city. Its main streets have been transformed into modern, wide avenues; its buildings, dressed in snow-white marble clothes, have acquired the look of magical palaces; its parks and public gardens, decorated with exotic trees and flowers, have looked like oases, where in the cool shade of the alleys, listening to the crystal ringing of fountains, passers-by can take refuge from the sultry summer sun.

The beauty of nature awakes creativity

The earliest abstract signs were carved on rock surfaces eight thousand years ago. Primitive drawings could be called a test of the pen of the first artists and also the beginning of the development of the ancient art of creating ornamentation. Subsequently, patterns became more and more complex and more perfect, and the variety of pictorial forms of patterns and techniques for their application increased. The elements of drawing were already arranged in a strict order, spirals, triangles and rhombuses were more clearly visible. So, fixing their life experience and outlook in visible images, people deepened and expanded their understanding of the world around them. Such drawings were always based on a sign, and accompanying ornamental field in different cultures carries elements of the eternally “living”, developing folk art and local artistic traditions.

Forests and Microclimate

Climate change is a many-sided process that is studied, analysed, predicted and fought against by taking special adaptive and mitigation measures, that is the adaption to the effects of climate change and the reduction of air pollution. The country’s desert scientists have been conducting research for many years in the light of scientific support for environmental policy, including afforestation activities that are in line with national landscaping traditions and the fulfilment of the country’s international obligations under three global conventions, one of which is on climate change. From 2021, on the basis of the National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment Protection of Turkmenistan have started developing new scientific and practical themes planned for five years. These include afforestation subjects, one of which is called “Influence of afforestation on soil and climatic conditions of the foothills of the Central Kopetdag Mountains” and aims to identify the influence of forests on microclimate, soil structure and its moisture content, temperature, soil enrichment with humus as a result of fallen leaves and needles, grass vegetation state, air quality near forests and water discharge areas. These and other factors will be explored on the basis of production areas of the Forest Seed Farming and Protection of Natural

Blossom, beloved Ashgabat!

The city has stretched towards the foothill plain of the Kopetdag Mountains the main vectors of wide avenues with housing estates and modern road junctions. Today, the 17th stage is being built, which is being formed in the Bagtiyarlyk etrap of the capital, in its southern part, on the bank of Lake Altyn Köl. On the instructions of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov, the new section of the capital will be in harmony with the architectural look of the Ashgabat City to be constructed. So, the city borders include the administrative areas located nearby. The volume of used materials and structures from local raw materials is growing, the environmental component of the design of residential, social and industrial facilities has been transferred to “new rails” – an eco-examination of each implemented project is carried out from the first days of land survey. And as a result, Ashgabat residents can admire the perfection of the engineering solutions, modern architecture, exterior and interior of buildings erected in the spirit of folk traditions. Legendary Architects of Turkmenistan

“The mausoleum of Sultan Sanjar is one of few buildings in Merv that survived the Mongol devastation and subsequent wars. It can still be seen from afar on the way to Old Merv. According to Yakut (13th century), the blue dome of the mausoleum was visible at a distance of one day’s journey of the caravan, and this is about 30 kilometres! Inside the building, high under the domed vault, the name of the master who led the construction has been preserved. His name was Muhammed Atsiz al-Sarahsi. And although nothing else is known about him, the very creation of his allows us to understand that he was a great architect of his time. Scientists found out that the system of a double-walled brick dome, invented by him, was repeated only three centuries later in distant Italy, in the covering of the dome of the main cathedral of Florence.” President of TurkmenistanGurbanguly BERDIMUHAMEDOV

Preparing for Important Exams

At the recent meeting of the Cabinet of Ministers, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov was informed of the draft Cycling Promotion Programme of Turkmenistan for 2021–2025 and the draft Action Plan to the Programme. Speaking about the timeliness of promoting the large-scale physical culture and sports movement in our country, the leader of the nation emphasised sport was a crucial factor contributing to peace and friendly relations among states and nations. Sports diplomacy that has a profound impact on the foreign policy of our state enables Turkmenistan to more often host major international tournaments, including cycling competitions. This is illustrated by the World Track Cycling Championships to be held in Ashgabat this autumn. The Turkmen leader highlighted the importance of bringing the draft Programme in line with modern requirements, in particular, the adoption of measures to build up material and technical resources necessary to promote cycling in the country. An important step towards this goal was made in 2013, when the National Cycling Technical Centre of Turkmenistan was established on the initiative of President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov (the Cycling Promotion Programme for 2013–2017 was approved the same year) that profoundly facilitated the work of the National Cycling Federation. Water Diplomacy for Sustainable Development

At the present stage of world development, one of the main and also topical issues facing entire humankind is the provision of food, water and energy security. In this direction, states and international organisations are making the necessary efforts to implement the main issues of the 2030 Agenda. Speaking about water diplomacy, which is widely realised by our state, it should be noted that it is conditioned by the peculiar geopolitical location of Turkmenistan and is harmoniously combined with the water supply policy of the countries of the entire Central Asian region. In this regard, it should be noted that the initiatives of Turkmenistan within the framework of the water diplomacy system originate from the historic speech of the head of our state during the World Water Forum held in 2015. This gave an impetus to the formation of a new diplomatic direction. Turkmenistan, regularly speaking from rostrums of prestigious international organisations with highly humane initiatives on the efficient use of water resources, is an active participant in world conventions operating in the context of this system.

To Promote the Development of Agricultural Production

A meeting of the working group of the participants of the regional project of the Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO), which is being implemented in Turkmenistan with the coordination of the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment Protection, has been held recently on the basis of the National Institute of Deserts, Flora and Fauna. In order to discuss the positions held and to present the planned events for the current year, the meeting was attended by senior officials of structural divisions of the agro-ecological ministry, including the Committee for Hydrometeorology of Turkmenistan, and also specialists from the Mejlis of Turkmenistan and the State Committee for Water Resources. The project is called “Integrated Natural Resources Management in Drought-Prone and Salt-Affected Agricultural Production Systems in Central Asia and Turkey” (CACILM-2). Its goal is to restore the fertility of agricultural lands and to increase the productivity of natural pastures in different agro-ecological regions of the country – mountains, desert and river oasis. It is planned to introduce advanced methods of desalinisation of irrigated soils, increase in their harvests and return of degraded pastures of the Karakum Desert to circulation by sowing seeds of high-yield psammophytes – white and black saxaul, Calligonum, Salsola richteri, Astragalus and other woody plants.

The sports movement of our country in the Era of Might and Happiness has gained unprecedented development. And not only on the national, but also on a global scale. Turkmenistan is increasingly becoming the centre of major planetary and regional competitions, bringing together thousands of professional athletes from all continents under the banner of the sport – the main envoy of peace and friendship. Such active development, of course, has influenced the growth of the skills of the Turkmen athletes, who achieve impressive successes in most kinds of sports. And all this is directly connected with the name of our President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov – an active adherent to a healthy lifestyle, whose initiatives in a relatively short period of time have elevated Turkmenistan to the rank of one of the world’s leading sports powers. The leader of the nation himself sets an example for our youth, finding in his busy schedule time for hiking and horse riding in mountainous areas, cycling and car racing. Such actions inspire young people for doing sports, and all the necessary conditions have been created for this.

In this regard, cooperation in the transport sector is a special topic on the international agenda. As the head of state noted, that route was being revived in a new quality and the transport and communications sector played a special role in restoring that route. Import substitution programme: Achievements and Prospects

In the context of modern foreign economic trends, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov sets a goal of raising competitiveness of the national economy and lessening its dependence on external factors. The import substitution programme was developed on the initiative of the leader of the nation. In accordance with this programme, the country is successfully fulfilling the tasks of expanding import substitution production and manufacturing the products able to compete with their imported analogues. Turkmenistan aims its active import substitution strategy at optimising foreign trade turnover, building up the capacity of non-primary commodity sectors, modernising technological facilities and bringing domestically made products in line with international standards. All this facilitates the successful integration of the national economy into the system of world economic relations and its sustainable growth. Currently, in conditions of the global epidemic, stability and independence of national economies from other countries and enhanced competitiveness of domestic enterprises are of great importance. The most effective and priority options for national economic development include the implementation of the import substitution strategy. The ongoing large-scale work in this sphere carried out in Turkmenistan in compliance with the far-sighted economic strategy of the President
