Sports prestige of the country

The physical culture, health and sports movement gained a wide scope in our country in the revival of the new epoch of the powerful state. It has become a noble tradition to host the sports events that gather thousands of people from around the globe. The XIV World Kurash Championship held in the Turkmen capital, Ashgabat on November 23–28, 2023, demonstrated the growing prestige of Turkmenistan in the world of sports. In this context, an international media forum ‘XIV World Kurash Championship on International Media’ was held on the eve of the tournament. The officials of the International Kurash Association, the State Committee on Physical Culture and Sports of Turkmenistan, the National Olympic Committee of Turkmenistan, representatives of the foreign and domestic mass media took part in the forum. A rich cultural programme was prepared for the guests before the Championship.

Intensive training sessions

On December 4, the national judo team of Turkmenistan started the training sessions in Tokyo, Japan. The Turkmen delegation that participated in the Tokyo Grand Slam 2023 attended the training sessions. It should be noted that the Turkmen athlete Hekim Agamammedov won a medal in the prestigious tournament that gathered 506 athletes from 84 countries.

Medal at the prestigious tournament

The Tokyo Grand Slam 2023, which is considered one of the most prestigious judo tournaments, concluded in Japan on December 3. 506 athletes from 84 countries took part in the two-day international tournament. 8 athletes represented the national team of Turkmenistan at the Grand Slam. Thus, the Turkmen judoka Hekim Agamammedov competed in the 66-kilogramme weight class event and won a bronze medal of the tournament. The private of the military unit 1001 named after Malikguly Berdimuhamedov of the Ministry of Internal Affairs of Turkmenistan defeated A.Berliner (USA), Y.Najafov (Azerbaijan) and R.Izvoreanu (Moldova) on the way to the bronze medal. Moreover, the Turkmen judoka won W.Lima (Brazil) and E.Battogtokh (Mongolia). Impressive performance brought the Turkmen athlete to the third place on the podium.

Success of the young chess players

The Turkmen chess players won one silver medal and one bronze medal on the first match day of the 2023 Western Asian Juniors & Girls Chess Championships in Colombo, Sri Lanka. Vepaly Halyniyazov, a student of Turkmen State Architecture and Construction Institute, scored 5.5 points out of 7 and took the second place. Harshavardhan, an international master from India, scored the same number of points and triumphed at the tournament thanks to the additional indicators.

It should be noted that this National Programme plays an important role in solving the issues related to the proper organization of the economic system and industrial enterprises. Books represent spiritual treasure

The National Leader of the Turkmen people, our Hero-Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov attaches great importance to reading of books, which represent the source of wisdom, and to the work of libraries, the treasuries of wisdom. This fact has a special meaning when people read the literary works by our Hero-Arkadag, because the literacy of our ancestors and their love for reading are reflected in the books by the National Leader of the Turkmen people. At the time of successful development in all spheres, the work of school libraries improves, because the books published in the modern printing centres attract readers with meaning, originality and quality. Those books provide a wide opportunity for the younger generations to explore the world of education, science, and knowledge, and to choose the right and clear path in life.

Concern for the younger generations

The bright future of the country depends on the concern for the younger generations. Thus, thanks to the state policy of the President of Turkmenistan, excellent conditions are created to ensure a prosperous and happy life for the young Turkmen people and their personal development, and to reveal their potential. The results of the educational transformations implemented by the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and our Hero-Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov are seen at every turn. To date, schools, kindergartens, educational and creative centres that meet the modern requirements are built and put into operation in the Turkmen capital, regional centres, and towns. They are equipped with modern educational technologies and interactive multimedia products. 6 kindergartens and 18 secondary schools were opened and put into operation in all regions of the country on the beginning of the 2023/2024 academic year. Laptop computers were presented to the first graders on behalf of the President of Turkmenistan and the National Leader of the Turkmen people.

High level of reparation

This year, the Kurash Wrestling Federation of Turkmenistan created excellent conditions for the preparation of the national team for international tournaments, including in the 2023 World Kurash Wrestling Championship, and organized the training sessions for the Turkmen athletes abroad and in the country. These training sessions were held in Tashkent, the capital of Uzbekistan, on March 12–21, in Gokdere Valley on April 1–20, at the Asian Championships in the People's Republic of China on April 25–30, in Issyk-Kul Region, the Kyrgyz Republic on July 1–15 and August 24 – September 11, the international tournament for the Issyk-Kul Cup on July 16–17, at the Asian Games (People's Republic of China) on September 23 – October 8, as well as the training sessions in the city of Arkadag on October 20 – November 22.

Interesting trips

A trip to museums in the Turkmen capital was organized for foreign guests who came to Turkmenistan to take part in the 2023 World Kurash Wrestling Championship. They visited the State Museum of the State Cultural Centre of Turkmenistan and the Museum of Fine Arts of Turkmenistan. At the museums, the guests got acquainted with the exhibits that represent different periods of our history. They were excited to start the World Championship with such an interesting trip.

An ancient form of martial arts

Kurash wrestling is a form of ancient and traditional martial arts of the Turkic peoples. This wrestling was considered as the decoration of national holidays and festive events of many peoples. According to historical sources, it originated in Central Asia about 3.5 thousand years ago. In the Alpamysh epic, kurash wrestling is described as one of the most popular and favourite martial arts. The ancient Greek philosopher Herodotus mentioned kurash wrestling in his work ‘History’ and emphasized its importance in the traditions of ancient nomadic peoples. UNESCO has included kurash wrestling on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016, recognizing that it promotes kindness and compassion and has a great impact on the wellbeing of society. The discipline, philosophy, techniques and traditions of kurash wrestling have been passed down from generation to generation over centuries. No one thought of combining them into a unified system, because every family member knew all the traditions of this wrestling. Moreover, kurash wrestling did not spread outside Central Asia. Only in 1980, Komil Yusupov, a master of kurash wrestling, judo and sambo, started conducting research. After 10 years, the rules of this wrestling were established. Impressive work is underway to promote physical culture, sports, and the principles of a healthy lifestyle, to attract the younger generations to sports, and to enhance the international sports prestige of our country under the wise leadership of the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov in the revival of the new epoch of the powerful state. The holding of the 2024 World Kurash Wrestling Championship and the 2025 World Sambo Championship in Ashgabat demonstrates this fact. The Turkmen people witness the international success of our country and the development in the field of sports. They use the multipurpose stadiums, sports schools, physical culture and health facilities and other sports complexes, built and put into operation all over the country. The President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov noted, ‘Physical culture and sports are the main sources of health and strength that encourage creative initiatives and determination to implement them’. Welcoming news

The World Cities Day is annually celebrated on October 31. On the same day this year, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization announced welcoming news that Ashgabat joined the UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN). This good news made the Turkmen people happy and proud. Turkmenistan develops active cooperation with foreign countries and international organizations. The country's cooperation with the United Nations, which is considered one of the most prestigious organizations in the world, as well as its specialized agencies and committees, has a wide scope. The UNESCO Creative Cities Network (UCCN) Programme was founded in 2004. It should be noted that our beautiful capital Ashgabat is the first city in Central Asia to join the Network. That is why our compatriots express their sincere gratitude to the President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and the National Leader of the Turkmen people Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov.

A modern facility

On November 12, the opening ceremony of the modern stable for keeping 600 Ahalteke horses was held near the city of Arkadag, located at the foothills of the Kopetdag Mountains. The total area of the new facility is 15.4 hectares, including several buildings within it. The participants visited the specialist rooms. The facility has a meeting hall, staff canteen and other necessary premises. The purpose of the new complex is to develop horse breeding, to increase the number of thoroughbred horses, and to improve breed characteristics.

Public health is national wealth

The President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov and our Hero-Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov conduct large-scale work to educate the healthy younger generations and ensure their happy life. The health facilities in the city of Arkadag, built at the foothills of the Kopetdag Mountains, have no equals in beauty and efficiency. The city is full of news and surprises; it enhances the international prestige as a city of youth, health, inspiration and generosity. As is known, the construction of the second stage of the development of the city of Arkadag is underway. This stage includes production complexes in all spheres. At the same time, medical and pharmaceutical industry enterprises will be built in the city. Our Hero-Arkadag noted that innovative technologies and methods should be actively used in the construction of those medical facilities, and that special importance should be attached to their equipment and supplies. This work will provide modern and efficient medical services to our people.

An old game

The game of chess is one of the most interesting sports. This game has been invented in ancient times. According to historical sources, our ancestors were deeply interested in the game of chess. In the 7th century, distinguished scientists came from the descendants of Sul, the ruler of Dehistan, located in the southwest of Turkmenistan. One of them is Abu Ishaq Ibrahim al-Suli, a well-known poet of the 9th century. Moreover, in the 10th century, the writer and historian Abu Bakr Muhammed bin Yahya al-Suli wrote a book about the lives of kings and caliphs and several poems in the form of ghazals and gathered information about scientists, poets and viziers. Besides, being a well-known chess player, Abu Bakr al-Suli created a valuable work ‘Kitab al-Shatranj’ (‘the Book on Chess’). These historical facts demonstrate that the game of chess had great importance in the Middle Ages. It should be noted that chess represents a legacy from our ancestors, enjoys growing popularity in Turkmenistan, and provokes the interest of the younger generations.

Kurash wrestling is an ancient sport

Kurash wrestling is a mode of sports that combines the wrestling arts of the Turkic peoples. According to the historical sources, this wrestling has been established on the Uzbek soil several millennia ago. The ancient Greek philosopher Herodotus mentioned kurash wrestling in his works. Avicenna noted in his writings that this wrestling is beneficial for health. He emphasized that kurash wrestling is of great importance for the physical and mental health.

An interesting event

The Etrap stages of the sports tournaments ‘Turkmenistan – the Home of Health and Inspiration’ are underway according to the joint plan of the Ahal Velayat Department of Türkmenistan Youth Physical Culture and Sports Organisation, the Velayat Main Education Department, the Velayat Council of Magtymguly Youth Organization of Turkmenistan and other public organizations. As part of these large-scale sports tournaments, the girl’s teams took part in the volleyball event held at the sports field at the secondary school 18 in Babadayhan Etrap. Many fans of volleyball watched the event. Players demonstrated their skills in an interesting and close competition. According to the results of the exciting matches, the girls' team of the Etrap secondary school 2 won the first place, the team of the secondary school 17 became the runner-up, and the team of the secondary school 4 entered the top three. The winners were awarded the letters of honour.
