MMA Fighters Go to the Platform

Last weekend, the Ashgabat sports complex was the venue for the Open Championships of the Han Mu Do MMA (mixed martial arts) Federation that marked the motto of the year “The Ocean of Wisdom Magtymguly Pyragy”. The great popularity of this martial art in our country is illustrated by the number of participants in the tournament – about 200 fighters representing the teams from the capital and the Ahal and Lebap velayats. The athletes were divided into three age groups. According to the rules, one five-minute round was held to determine the winner in the matches in the adult category, a four-minute round in the junior category and a three-minute round for the youngest participants, for many of whom this year’s championships became the first tournament in their sports career. The regulations also required the participants to fight without protective headgear.

The National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty of Turkmenistan, Honorary Elder Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov visited the new Equestrian Complex of the city of Arkadag, located in a picturesque place at the foothills of the Kopetdag Mountains. There, the Hero-Arkadag went on a horseback ride and acquainted himself with the designs of buildings planned to be erected as part of the second phase of the city’s development, the decor of some objects and plans for the layout of new buildings. Following the wisdom “When you get up in the morning, visit your father and then your horse,” the Hero-Arkadag asked about the condition of the horses kept at the Equestrian Complex. In recent years, everything there has changed beyond recognition. This is vivid evidence that, as a result of the initiatives of the Hero-Arkadag and the consistent work of Arkadagly Hero Serdar, the cities and villages of the country are becoming more beautiful with every passing day. Maintaining favourable environmental conditions in the city of Arkadag is one of the main requirements for project developers and builders.

At the Edge of Centuries

The city of Anau was declared the Cultural Capital of the Turkic World 2024. The decision was made unanimously following the 39th Term Meeting of the Permanent Council of TURKSOY, which was held in Bursa (Türkiye). This status is awarded to ancient cities, the history of which is inextricably linked with the history of the formation of Turkic-speaking nations in the Age of Antiquity and the Middle Ages, to bind together the Turkic world with common cultural and artistic wealth, to strengthen unity, solidarity and brotherhood among the Turkic peoples and to promote culture and art of the Turkic world worldwide. Our correspondent talks with the Head of the National Directorate for the Protection, Study and Restoration of Historical and Cultural Monuments at the Ministry of Culture of Turkmenistan Muhammed Mamedov about what Anau and its surroundings are famous for. NT: “There are not many places on the planet which have evidence shedding light on the crucial stages in the development of human civilisation. One of these places is the foothills of the Kopetdag Mountains in Turkmenistan. There, the ancient settled agricultural area, known as the Anau civilisation, emerged in the northern foothill plain in the V-IV millennia BC. With unflagging interest, one archaeological expedition after another sieved through hundreds of cubic metres of soil to find unique and inval

Entrepreneurship is the Road to Prosperity

Today it is difficult to imagine the economy of Turkmenistan without private business. The non-state sector plays a significant role in modernising and diversifying sectors of the national economy, increasing the volume and expanding the range of high-quality and competitive products, ensuring food abundance and developing the country’s export potential, the respected President Serdar Berdimuhamedov emphasises. The potential of small and medium-sized businesses in Turkmenistan is evidenced by the fact that the share of the non-state sector of the economy, excluding the fuel and energy complex, in the country’s GDP is steadily increasing and has reached 70 per cent, and the private sector employs more than half of the employed population. Based on the strategic objectives of the Programme of the President of Turkmenistan of the socioeconomic development of the country in 2022–2028 and the National Programme of the President of Turkmenistan of transforming the social and living conditions of the population of villages, settlements, etrap towns and etrap centres for the period until 2028, the country’s entrepreneurs continue to consistently work to increase the manufacture of import-substituting and export-oriented products.

Plants that Love the Wind

Nature is incredibly inventive in its manifestations. In the process of long evolution or historical development, various characteristics appeared in plants as a result of mutations. If they turned out to be useless for the existence of organisms, they gradually disappeared. Those that helped survive were consolidated, strengthened and passed on by inheritance. The characteristics that we currently see in various desert or mountain plants in their external and internal structure are the result of natural selection. They help them vegetate and form fruits and seeds in harsh arid dry conditions, as well as form populations in new areas. Also, for plants in short weather conditions in the Karakum conditions, it is necessary not only to undergo the reproduction process, but also to distribute around the fruits and seeds that form on them. Different types of flora also use environmental factors, for example, wind, with the help of which plants are pollinated and distribute fruits and seeds. Many similar plants grow in the deserts of Turkmenistan: sedge, astragalus, calligonum, sand acacia, white and black saxaul, tamarix and others. In the process of evolution, all of them have developed special outgrowths-devices on their fruits that improve their flying properties.

High-Tech Medicine in Arkadag City

Today, in the period of the Revival of the New Era of the Powerful State, tremendous work is being done in our country to implement the Saglyk State Programme and to protect and improve the health of the people, which is a key priority of the policy of the esteemed President. Great importance is attached to improving the social and living standards of the people and increasing human life expectancy. The state policy priorities in the health sector include disease prevention, the improvement of the education and training system, the strengthening of the research and legal frameworks, the introduction of advanced world practices, medical technologies and world science advances into domestic health care and broad international cooperation. Following Centuries-Old National Traditions

One of the characteristic features of the mentality of the Turkmen people has been and remains social support for those who need protection and help. This trait is reflected in the traditions of the people. Along with hospitality and benevolence, humanism, mercy and charity unite people, testifying to their spiritual wealth and the need of the soul to do good deeds and help others. An example of preserving the age-old national traditions of kindness and mercy is the activities of the Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov Charitable Foundation for Aid to Children in Need of Guardianship, which embodies such noble principles as humanism and mercy, showing special care for children and adolescents left without the care of parents or persons replacing them.

Even Mountains Worship Holy Places

In the northeast of the city of Aktau, in the Mangyshlak region, there is a mountain called Shirkala, which in Turkmen means “Lion's fortress” or “Lion Mountain”. There are also other names: the sphinx mountain and the white yurt of gods. If you look at it from one side, it really resembles a huge white yurt, but on the other side, it looks like a sleeping lion with its huge head resting on its paws. Some argue that it resembles a huge bowl, which was turned over by a satiated traveller. Residents of the region consider Shirkala a shrine of Mangyshlak. The mountain with a height of more than 300 metres is capricious and does not tolerate curious onlookers. Despite its relatively low height for mountaineering, Shirkala is a very harsh and unpredictable mountain. Monolithic walls enclosing the summit from almost all sides make climbing to this mountain very difficult, some routes are accessible to professional athletes only. Shirkala has an attractive atmosphere, it attracts travellers, climbers, writers and painters.

Tourism without Borders

The priority vectors of Turkmenistan’s foreign policy include the promotion of mutually beneficial cooperation with the Middle East countries. The United Arab Emirates takes a special place among these countries. The working visit of the National Leader of the Turkmen people, Chairman of the Halk Maslahaty Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov to the United Arab Emirates on January 4-5, 2024 was fruitful in expanding the bilateral cooperation. The talks resulted in reaching an agreement, including on the launch of air flights between the capitals of the two countries – Ashgabat and Abu Dhabi. The first Ashgabat–Abu Dhabi–Ashgabat flight was performed on January 5. This event aroused interest among many citizens of Turkmenistan who would like to visit Abu Dhabi as tourists. In an interview with an NT correspondent, a tourism specialist at the Haýýat Syýahat Travel Company Yana Kazakova spoke how best to plan a tourist trip to Abu Dhabi. This company works directly with the destinations throughout the United Arab Emirates.

Yurt – a Design of Amazing Harmony

A famous architect of the 20th century Le Corbusier wrote, “The yurt is one of the highest achievements of architecture. Due to its proportions commensurate with humans, it harmoniously fits into the landscape, serving as an example of the unity of nature and human habitation.” By creating this dwelling that was perfect in its functional qualities, our ancestors could see an image, embodying true similarity with the spiritual and moral values of human existence, in the yurt. A small village in the sands awoke before dawn – the villagers were preparing to celebrate the spring holiday – Nowruz Bayram. Village children and young people were crowding near the large dune, where the swings were installed firmly. The silhouettes of women dressed in their best clothes were reflected in the glow of the fire under the large cauldrons – they were cooking a festive meal.
