The literary work Oguznama reads that the Turkmen national wrestling was one of the most popular martial arts in ancient times. In these times, the national wrestling was of great importance in preventing controversial issues.
The Turkmen people loved their national wrestling and created proverbs with a deep meaning related to this martial art, namely, ‘don't pay respect to anyone in a wrestling contest’, ‘the one who fights will win, the one who competes will lose’, ‘wrestling brings glory, war teaches a lesson’, ‘the one who falls will not enjoy the struggle’.
