Dual Success of Young Chess Players

Good news came from Korumdu town (Issyk-Kul, Kyrgyzstan), where the Central Asia Youth U8-U16 Chess Championships ended yesterday. The Turkmen young adherents of the ancient intellectual game added two, gold and silver, medals to our country’s collection of the sporting achievements, the Chess Federation of Turkmenistan reports. The success of our chess players is also significant because over 300 participants competed for the awards – 128 from the host country, 98 from Kazakhstan, 69 from Uzbekistan and only 5 Turkmen juniors. Looking ahead, I will say that this achievement secured Turkmenistan an honourable third place in the overall team standings.

The President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov noted in the Address to the Turkmen athletes, ‘Following the heroic and victorious path of our ancestors, you should demonstrate your skills at the international events and win medals. I firmly believe that you will protect the honour and dignity of Turkmenistan, achieve excellent results in various competitions, and lift the national flag of our beloved Motherland highly’. The Turkmen athletes consider it the sacred duty to earn the trust of the President of Turkmenistan. Orazgul Babanyyazova, a student at the secondary school 28 in Gumdag, Balkan Velayat, is one of these young athletes. Born in Gumdag in 2008, Orazgul has been enthusiastically attending the sports school 7 of the Balkan Velayat Main Department on Physical Culture and Sports since the age of 10. It should be noted that the coach of the sports school Orazgylych Chakanov, who has already prepared a number of talented athletes, does his best to train the weightlifters. Thus, the success of athletes depends primarily on the commitment and hard work of coach.

Young Champion of the Continent

The Asian Wrestling Championships ended in the Thai city of Si Racha in late July. These competitions made themselves memorable for a victory celebrated by a 17-year-old athlete from Ashgabat Alp Arslan Begenjov in the under 79 kg weight category of the U20 freestyle wrestling tournament. Our compatriot is the first Turkmen athlete to show such a high result on the international sports arena. On the way to the gold medal, Alp Arslan performed in 4 matches, in 3 of which he gained the so-called clear victory with a difference of 10 points. He defeated a Japanese wrestler Shunsuke Mizusaki (12:2) at the start and left no chance for Ramazan Iskanderov from Kyrgyzstan (10:0) in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal, the Turkmen athlete wrestled with the 2023 Asian Champion in the under 74 kg category Yerkan Beksultanov from Kazakhstan, who failed to provide decent resistance and lost 0:6 to Alp Arslan.

The sports schools play an important role in preparing excellent athletes and masters for the national teams of the country. The sports school 6 implements the active work on selecting, revealing and training talented and promising young athletes. Our students succeed at the international and national events thanks to the instructions of their coaches and teachers who are masters in their fields. The athletes of the sports school coached by the international master of sports Orazmyrat Charyev successfully performed and took the prize-winning places at the Taekwondo Championship of Turkmenistan (ITF). Ysmayyl Taylyev (2 times), Orazmuhammet Hudayberdiyev (40 kg) and Omar Berdimyradov (35 kg) won the single tul events.

In today’s world, sport is a significant component of international cooperation that contributes greatly to building trust between nations. In fulfilling the tasks of international relations, the sphere of activity of sports diplomacy focuses on establishing and maintaining contacts among the sports communities of different countries at various levels. Thanks to the records and achievements of athletes and national teams in international tournaments, the perception and image of a country can change at such an incredible speed that even diplomatic actions are not always able to match. One of the most important tools of sports diplomacy in solving relationship problems is public diplomacy. Public diplomacy is used to inform the public and foreign audiences, establish contacts and initiate a constructive dialogue, which contributes greatly to the formation of trusting relations between the public of different countries. Honour to the Turkmen Olympians

On July 22, the special ceremony was held for the national team of Turkmenistan participating in the XXXIII Summer Olympics in Paris, the capital of France. The event was organized at the Martial Arts Sports Complex of the Olympic Village in Ashgabat. Many representatives of the sports community, including the members of the State Committee on Physical Culture and Sports of Turkmenistan, the National Olympic and Paralympic Committees, the sports federations, public organizations, and students of institutions of higher education greeted the Olympic delegation of Turkmenistan with heavy applause. The delegation consists of 19 people, including six athletes in four sports, namely, judo, weightlifting, swimming, and athletics.
