According to the World Health Organization, an arrhythmia is any heart rhythm that differs from normal sinus rhythm.

Arrhythmias are associated with many pathogenetic mechanisms, including impaired automatism, excitability, contractility, refractoriness, conduction, and aberration (possibility of passing an impulse along additional pathways) of the heart [2, 4, 12].
