The UN General Assembly unanimously adopted Resolution 71/275 at its 71st session in February 2017, which proclaimed December 12 as the International Day of Neutrality. The initiative to establish this Day was put forward by the Hero-Arkadag at the International Conference “Policy of Neutrality: International Cooperation for Peace, Security and Development”, which was held in Ashgabat on December 12, 2015.

The International Day of Neutrality is a significant event in the history of international relations, which illustrates the worldwide recognition of the important role of the policy of neutrality in maintaining peace and stability. The policy of neutrality, the Resolution states, is aimed at promoting the use of preventive diplomacy through the prevention of conflict, mediation, good offices, fact-finding missions, negotiations, the use of special envoys, informal consultations, peacebuilding and targeted development activities.
