The modern sports facilities built and put into operation thanks to the concern of our Hero-Arkadag Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov provided excellent conditions for the development of ice hockey, which is considered the most popular mode of winter sports in the country. In May, 2015, the National Ice Hockey Federation of Turkmenistan became a member of the International Ice Hockey Federation.

The national ice hockey team of Turkmenistan achieved positive results in a short period and qualified for the 2024 IIHF World Championship Division III Group A. At the tournament held in the Kyrgyz Republic on March 10–16, the national team of Turkmenistan defeated the teams of Mexico and the Republic of South Africa.
