ASHGABAT: Yesterday, today, tomorrow

In the year of the 30th anniversary of our sacred independence, which is being held under the motto “Turkmenistan – the Home of Peace and Trust”, we are also celebrating the 140th anniversary of Ashgabat. As the connection between the past, present and future is inextricable, the history of Ashgabat is a visible evidence of the new life that came to the ancient Turkmen land after gaining real state sovereignty. A Brief Prehistory in Figures and Facts

Decorative Items from Shehrihaybar

In a new historical era, priority importance is attached to the study and preservation of the literary and cultural heritage, national traditions, tangible and intangible values for future generations. Setting the tasks of promoting the glorious history and ancient monuments of the Turkmen people, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov approved the State Programme of archaeological excavations at the monuments in the regions of the country along the Great Silk Road for 2018–2021. The historical monuments of particular interest that appeared due to the Great Road that ran through the territory of our Motherland include the medieval settlement of Shehrihaybar. The settlement, located 10 kilometres north of the Geoktepe railway station and adjacent to the northern outskirts of the eponymous farmers’ association in the Ahal velayat, became a subject of research. In the past, the settlement was located along one of the routes of the Nisa–Khwarezm section of the Great Silk Road. It was an important centre of trade and crafts of the region.

Life is animated water

Throughout the history of their existence, people have accumulated rich experience in using of water for medicinal purposes. People were treated and strengthened by it in Ancient Egypt, Babylon, China and Ancient Greece. It is interesting that the word “doctor” in translation from Assyrian means “deity who knows water”. In Central Asia, baths existed already in the 2nd-1st centuries BC in the territory of Nisa. This is evidenced by the characteristic remains of the walls, properly designed “bathtubs”, floors and fragments of painting. Archaeologists accurately established the fact that the discovered room is a bathhouse. There is a legend about Rodoguna, the daughter of the Parthian king Mithridates I. Once, when she was having a bath, the capital city was besieged by enemies. Twisting her wet hair, which she vowed to wash after the victory, the queen jumped on her horse and at the head of the army rushed to the enemies.

Schoolchildren’s Day Regimen

Schoolchildren’s day regimen, the most rational distribution of the time of day for periods of work, sleep and rest in a certain order can be considered one of the first steps to preserve the health of a child. The word regimen is a French word and in translation means “the action of governing”. First of all, it is about governing your time, and in the end, governing both your health and life.

Chlorella is a fount of nutrients and biologically active compounds

The participants highlighted health benefits of chlorella for humans and its use as biologically active supplements in animal husbandry, poultry farming and cosmetology, means to increase soil fertility and a raw material to produce biofuel. The important issues discussed at the meeting included methods to cultivate chlorella. In this regard, the cost-effective and science-based methods were proposed.

Black Spots on Long Ears

We happened to see these charming animals before – in vicinity of Lake Sarykamysh and Zengi-baba, where a hare has where to hide. All it has to do is to dive into thicket of reeds or get lost amidst the trunks and branches of saxaul. However, this time we were lucky to see a tolai hare in the mountains in the territory of the Kopetdag Nature Reserve. The hare that had met few people, not frightened by them, was in no hurry to get away. It ran past us, amongst the tall bushes of blackberries and barberries, stopped and looked around. We froze – the hare was so close that we could see it. Black spots on its ears and paws became clearly visible in scarce grass when it jumped to the side. It turned out that hares live not only in tugay, near rivers, lakes and in the Karakum Desert, but also in the middle mountain belt. Scientists find the tolai hare in the mountains at an altitude of up to 2,500 metres above sea level, and they say that it is larger than the sandy hare.

Exhibits Tell about the Geological Past of the Earth

The Museum of Magtymguly Turkmen State University is a large repository of the material archive of accumulated geological knowledge. The collection has a historical value and also allows to include already collected and partially studied material in new scientific research and to attract experts who are more competent in narrow applied scientific fields and directions. The museum provides methodological assistance and consults students in carrying out scientific work on this topic. There, the natural remarkable sight of the Gaurdak-Koytendag region is reflected in the model “Traces of the Hojapil Dinosaurs” with a three-dimensional image of a predatory tyrannosaur, made at a scale of 1:2 from the life-size of the animal and accompanied by a photo stand explaining the process of creating the display. There are plaster casts of traces of the Jurassic lizards, as well as a replica of the Kunyaurgench meteorite kept in the State Museum of the State Cultural Centre of Turkmenistan. It is considered the largest of all the fireballs that fell to the territory of the CIS.

Trust in peace, trust in a partner – the way to yourself

This very simple thought of the ancient sages is more topical today than ever. After propagating and realising the principles of trust and concord, tolerance and humanism in every society and in every state, these concepts are logically projected into international relations. The main concern of all humankind has always been and will remain the preservation of peace on earth and good-neighbourly and equal relations based on trust and mutual respect. And in this regard, it would be appropriate to refer to the Resolution of the United Nations General Assembly “2021 – International Year of Peace and Trust”, unanimously adopted in 2019. In particular, this document notes, “Peace is not just the absence of conflict, but a positive, dynamic and participatory process in which dialogue is encouraged.” The resolution contains an appeal to all states and peoples to intensify efforts and activities to promote a culture of peace.

Entrepreneurship: at a New Stage of Development

The main goal of the economic strategy of the President of Turkmenistan is to create the society-centred market economy, to develop a highly efficient system with effective entrepreneurship and a modern market infrastructure that provides social guarantees to all segments of the population and to build a highly competitive national economy capable of ensuring the stable long-term progress of the country. In this regard, the priority aspects of the national economic policy include the encouragement of entrepreneurial activity and support of small business. Entrepreneurship in a developed market economy is a key market segment, as it serves as a catalyst for economic growth. Firstly, this is due to its ability to adapt quickly to new market requirements and sustaining competitiveness consequently. Secondly, SMEs are capable of offering employment to the population on a par with large-scale enterprises. Thirdly, unlike large-scale enterprises, business entities, due to their mobility, can immediately adopt advanced technologies and innovations. Thus, small businesses, as the most massive form of entrepreneurial activity, are capable of tackling such issues as involving a significant number of the population into active economic activity, expanding a competitive environment, weakening monopolisation, reorienting small-sized businesses to produce scarce commodities and services, fil

Military and Patriotic Events Held in the Capital City

The veneration of war relics is an immutable tradition among the military, and as part of the celebration of the Day of Defenders of the Motherland, flowers were laid in the territory of the Halk Hakydasy memorial complex, at the foot of the Baky Söhrat and Milletiň Ogullary monuments, erected in honour of the soldiers who perished during the Great Patriotic War, national heroes who sacrificed their lives defending the Motherland. There, at the foothills of the Kopetdag Mountains, political education classes are held for servicemen and cadets of the Military Institute and of the Ashgabat military school. The military and patriotic action took place in Berdi, muhamed Annayev Specialised Military School 1. The name of this teacher and warrior, winner of the medal “For Courage”, the grandfather of the President was given to the school in 2014. Later, a bronze bust was installed in the foyer of the main building of the educational institution, which is part of the military campus of the administrative and educational buildings of the Ministry of Defence. Last year, the school accepted for storage archival documents and the battle banner of the unit where he had served during the Great Patriotic War. It now stands near the bust against the wall on one side, with a replica of the Banner of Victory on the other one. There, on the morning of January 27, in a solemn atmosphere

Banking system: remote servicing

One of the characteristic features of the modern and, as it is considered, the future of digital economy is closely connected with the rapid and comprehensive development of distance technologies, which are increasingly introduced into all spheres of life. As practice shows, the main factor of effective functioning and success of the banking system is also connected with introduction of convenient and high-quality digital technologies for customer service. The banks of Turkmenistan are also developing in this direction. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov constantly notes the importance of widespread introduction of digital technologies into the banking sector, which is currently undergoing an active transformation. Making practical steps in this direction is aimed at ensuring an increase in the range of services provided and capabilities of the national payment system and promoting the competitiveness of the country’s credit institutions.

Stamped ceramics of Merv

Large cities that grew up along the Great Silk Road were not only strategic hubs of transit trade, but also well-known centres of production of a wide variety of goods. For a long time, earthenware dishware that is so necessary in every home remained to be among the most used. It is not surprising that ceramic art reached perfection in medieval Turkmenistan. A special group of unglazed ceramics includes vessels with the entire surface ornamented in relief-stamped patterns and made using special matrices (galyb). They are found at the settlements of the 11th-13th centuries. The largest centre of production of such ceramic products was Merv. A vast quarter of ceramists was located in the vicinity of medieval Merv, behind the wall of the site of the ancient settlement of Sultan Gala, in the square of the former suburb, rabad. Thousands of furnaces operated there from the 11th till the early 13th century. Locally manufactured ceramic items – glazed and unglazed – include numerous fragments of high-quality stamped vessels. Ceramic products deformed during firing or damaged during manufacturing were found in mass quantities in the dumps of ceramic scrap; artisans broke them following the custom not to keep their failures. After thorough selection and restoration, the fragments helped recreate a large number of magnificent forms of dishware.

Healing Root at All Times

Speaking at one of the sittings of the Cabinet of Ministers, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov called upon scientists and health professionals “to take a science-based approach to using medicinal plants, including those that grow in our land and should be studied thoroughly.” Many regions of Turkmenistan (Kopetdag, Great Balkhan and Small Balkhan, Koytendag) abound in valuable species of medicinal plants. Liquorice (buyan in Turkmen, Glycyrrhiza glabra in Latin) has a special place among a huge number of useful wild plants that grow in the Amudarya valley. It is also known as liquorice root and Glycyrrhiza glandulifera. The liquorice plant is an herbaceous perennial legume.

Personal Hygiene Rules

Hygiene is an extremely comprehensive concept. It includes the regime of working and rest conditions, rational nutrition, adherence to the rules of body care, use of hygiene products and much more. Personal hygiene is a set of rules for human behaviour in everyday life or at work. In the narrow sense, it is hygienic maintenance of body, clothing and household items. Violation of personal hygiene requirements can negatively affect the health of not only one person, but also of large groups of people (team, family, members of various communities).

To the Glory of Turkmenistan

Training sessions of Turkmen weightlifters from the men and women’s national teams, who are preparing for the qualifying competitions of the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo (Japan) postponed to 2021, resumed in the last days of December last year. Our weightlifters improve their skills at the Ashgabat Olympic Complex that offers the conditions conducive to training. President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov made sure of that during his recent visit to the main sports facility of Turkmenistan. The ambitious Olympic Complex project was initiated and approved by the leader of the nation, who adheres to a healthy lifestyle and makes regular hiking, horse riding and cycling tours at the foothills, setting a good example for talented Turkmen youth. With putting into operation the sports facility, which has no analogue in Central Asia, Ashgabat became one of the most popular cities in the world to host major international tournaments. This inspired our athletes to much better performance at sports competitions, which profoundly contributed to their outstanding results.
